Intrauterine devices (IUDs) and other intrauterine techniques have been used in animals for a variety of purposes, including:

Contraception

IUDs can be used to prevent pregnancy in mares. IUDs can be inserted at any stage of the estrous cycle and can be monitored using a handheld metal detector or transrectal ultrasound.

Weight gain

IUDs can be used to promote weight gain in cattle. Studies have shown that IUDs can help cattle gain weight more than spaying, which can be physically difficult for the animals and can lead to less weight gain.
Uterine infections

Intrauterine infusion of penicillin can be used to treat uterine infections in cows.
Endometrial ablation

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) can be injected into the uterine horn to create an animal model of endometrial ablation. TCA causes chemical burns to local tissue, which leads to a shrinking uterine cavity, diminished glands, and increased fibrotic tissue.
