Consider the purpose
The type and number of samples needed depends on the purpose of the collection.
Avoid injury
When taking samples from live animals, avoid injuring or distressing the animal, or putting the operator or attendants in danger.
Use fresh samples
Fresh samples are more diagnostic than old samples. For example, old urine can develop crystals or bacteria, which can lead to false results.
Clean samples
Clean samples are better, especially for urine. Wringing out urine from a towel can introduce artifacts that can confuse diagnostics.
Collect quickly
The sooner a sample is provided, the sooner the test can be run and treatment started.
Label samples
Clearly label samples with a waterproof marker on the primary containers.
